Ruth smiled and repeated what she had said before turning to the butler. “Show Lord Hanvey in if it is him.”

The butler confirmed that it was him before bowing and leaving. Eloise had only a few seconds to compose herself before he would walk in, and the oddest combination of dismay and anticipation roiled beneath her skin, raising the hair on the surface. She felt his presence before he walked in, and her breath ceased when he appeared, much like it did the first time she saw him at the ball.

“Forgive my lateness, Ruth,” he said. “I was held by something unexpected, and—” He stopped speaking when his eyes met Eloise’s, and they were filled with surprise. She did not know what he was thinking, but she wondered if he was as affected by her as she was by him. Perhaps she was harboring too much hope, and his coldness the night before should tell her that he did not feel a fraction of what she felt.
